Manuel’s story

First of all, NDT is one of the highest quality and most dynamic nephrology journals. The role of reviewer is time-consuming but also enriching, as it requires a deep intellectual exercise. At the same time, it keeps me connected to the most active lines of research in my field.

I value above all the solidity of the data and the methodology used to obtain the results. At the same time, the originality of the study and its contribution to providing novel data or resolving doubtful or controversial aspects are crucial points to guide the review.

I believe that the role of the reviewer is crucial to maintaining quality research and contribute to the selection of papers worthy of appearing in top journals such as NDT. To maintain independent and quality journals is fundamental, so that the reader has at his disposal medical information of the highest quality and originality. The reviewer can point out aspects that have gone unnoticed by the authors and the enrichment of a work after passing through reviewer’s comments is always a great satisfaction.

Perhaps one of the most difficult aspects is the revision of otherwise novel works, but lacking the standard methodology required today by the scientific community. I have had this experience especially with studies from developing countries with little or no support for research. I think that the reviewer should always convey something positive to the authors, even if their paper is rejected, so that the criticism can be useful for future research or to redesign their investigation more solidly.
