Andrejus’ story

As a Nephrologist from Eastern Europe, I’ve noticed that our scientific activity is less pronounced compared to Western Europe. However, my meeting with Mentor Professor Andrzej Więcek has inspired me to be more active and strive for publications in widely cited journals. Additionally, both Professor Andrzej Więcek and Young Nephrology Club chairwoman Ewa Pawłowicz-Szlarska have motivated me to establish the Young Nephrology Platform in Lithuania. I express my gratitude to the YNP Mentorship Programme, Professor Andrzej Więcek, and Ewa Pawłowicz-Szlarska for enabling me to achieve this goal.

Overall, we conducted 12 online meetings during which we actively discussed self-management and self-education processes. Professor Więcek provided valuable insights on gaining international recognition and building a scientific career in my country. Additionally, we explored clinical case solutions.

As part of the YNP mentoring program, I achieved the following goals:

Developed a strategy and implemented actions to establish a platform for young nephrologists in Lithuania.
Strengthened my clinical skills.
Engaged in discussions and identified potential future research areas across institutions.
Established professional relationships and fostered collaboration with international colleagues.
Stayed informed about the latest research and developments in nephrology from a globally recognized institution.

As a young nephrologist, I encountered challenges in clinical experience related to transplantation medicine and resistant arterial hypertension. Professor A. Więcek graciously supported me and engaged in discussions regarding unusual cases.

Overall, the YNP programme coordinator team functions exceptionally well. According to their assessment, I have not encountered any significant challenges during the YNP mentoring programme.

Here are some recommendations for future mentees based on my experience:

1. Active Engagement: Actively participate in discussions, ask questions, and seek guidance. Your mentor’s insights can be invaluable for your professional growth.
2. Set Clear Goals: Define specific goals you want to achieve during the mentorship. Whether it’s improving clinical skills, publishing research, or networking, having clear objectives will guide your interactions.
3. Learn from Unusual Cases: Use unusual or challenging cases as learning opportunities. Discuss them with your mentor and explore different approaches. These cases can enhance your problem-solving abilities.
4. Network and Collaborate: Take advantage of the mentorship to build professional relationships. Collaborate with colleagues, attend conferences, and stay updated on the latest research in your field.
5. Reflect and Apply: Regularly reflect on what you’ve learned and how it applies to your practice. Implement new knowledge and skills in your clinical work.
