Onconephrology Working Group

ONCO-ERA Working Group

About us

Onconephrology is dedicated to all aspects of kidney disease and cancer, presenting through various clinical syndromes such as acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, proteinuria, and electrolyte disorders. These conditions often arise from cancer treatments like chemotherapy, immunotherapy, chimeric antigen receptor T cells, and stem cell transplants. Additionally, some syndromes are directly related to the cancer itself, such as monoclonal gammopathy or glomerular diseases associated with malignancy. Moreover, patients with kidney disease receiving immunosuppressive treatment, especially kidney transplant recipients, face an increased cancer risk, necessitating specialized care.

The novel Working Group is intended to promote activities in the field of Onconephrology in Europe by pursuing the following goals:

  1. Promote research: Encourage and support studies that explore the intersection of kidney disease and cancer.
  2. Enhance clinical activities: Improve the management and treatment of kidney-related complications in cancer patients.
  3. Foster education: Provide educational resources and training for healthcare professionals in the field of Onconephrology.
  4. Facilitate collaboration: Create opportunities for interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations among nephrologists, oncologists, and other healthcare providers.
  5. Address knowledge gaps: Identify and address gaps in understanding the mechanisms and treatment of kidney diseases in cancer patients
